How to register to vote for the 2023 elections
REGISTRATION
From 1st December 2022 until 15th January 2023 people from countries with a reciprocal agreement must register on the Electoral Roll in order to be able to vote in the Local Elections 2023.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Be over 18 years of age
- Have the legal capacity to vote
- Be registered on the Town Padron
- Be a continuous Spanish resident for the following length of time:
3 years = BRITISH & NORWEGIAN NATIONALS
5 years = BOLIVIA, CAPE VERDE, CHILE, COLOMBIA, SOUTH KOREA, ECUADOR, ICELAND, NEW ZEALAND, PARAGUAY, PERU AND TRINIDAD & TOBAGO NATIONALS
*Even though you may have registered for previous elections, you MUST register again.*
HOW TO DO IT:
- The “Oficina del Censo Electoral” (Electoral Census Office) will send a form to everyone who qualifies to vote. This form must be completed with your NIE, signed and a photocopy of your Residence Card enclosed and sent back by free post to “Delegacion Provincial de la Oficina del Censo Electoral (the regional census office).
- You can also register online at the “Sede Electronica del INE” (National Statistics Office) website http://sede.ine.gob.es You will need to have a digital certificate associated with your NIE number.
- At the Town Hall. People who believe they meet the requirements but have not received the paperwork from the Census Office can register in person at their local Town Hall, presenting their original Resident’s card and a photocopy. The duration of legal residence in Spain must be justified by a residency certificate if this information is not visible on your identity card.
- It is also possible to give written authorisation to a third party who will be able to go to your local Town Hall on your behalf to register your intention to vote. The third party will need to take a photocopy of the NIE of the interested party, and their own original photo ID to prove that they are the authorised person.
OTHER EU COUNTRIES
To register their intention to vote, residents and legal non-residents from EU countries can go to the Town Hall and sign the registration form at any time before the closure of the electoral roll on 30th January 2023.
*If you have already registered for previous elections and have voted before, it is NOT necessary to register again.*
THOSE WITH SPANISH NATIONALITY
It is not necessary to register to vote. Spanish nationals are automatically included in the Electoral Roll by the National Statistics Office.
