Security Measures to take when leaving your home while you are on Holiday

Holidays are eagerly anticipated and we get preoccupied with the date of departure but there are details that slip by us such as household security and the path to our holiday destination. We are going to present some simple preventative measures to ensure that your holidays are peaceful.

Before leaving:

~      Advise the administrator of the complex / unit. If it is possible, tell them who holds your keys in case they are required.

~      Don´t leave keys in any secret hiding place.

~      Don´t publicise that you are going away on holiday.

~      Speak to a neighbour or an administrator in order that they remove any post from your post box with the aim of giving no signals that you are away.

~      Inform your administrator or a neighbour about the places, hotels, hostels etc., you will be staying and give them the telephone numbers of the relevant places in order to be able to locate you.

~      Don´t leave any objects of value on show.

~      Ensure that all doors and windows are securely closed.

~      Disconnect electrical apparatus that you will not be using (Televisions, radios etc.).

~      Use timers for the house lights.

~      Leave your fridge on the minimum setting in order not to waste energy.

~      Don´t leave messages on the answer machine informing of your absence.

~      Cut off the gas and ensure that the stove pilot light is out due to cutting the supply and not because it is turned off.

~      Lock away important papers or give copies to family members.
~      Advise someone you trust regarding your insurance policy and what to do in case of a major accident (and who to advise).
